OpenAI CEO Altman stated that the company made several adjustments after consulting with the Trump administration prior to the public release of GPT-5.6. In the weeks leading up to the full launch, OpenAI communicated with high-ranking U.S. officials, including Secretary of Commerce Raimondo and Secretary of the Treasury Yellen. Under pressure from the government to release the model in phases, the new series will initially be available only to select partners. GPT-5.6 is scheduled to be made public on Thursday, and OpenAI has indicated that it has received approval from U.S. government leadership. Altman did not elaborate on the specific adjustments but mentioned that the government is testing the new model and looking for potential issues. He noted that the understandability, fairness, and speed of the process are important, and the government seems to agree with these goals, suggesting that future model releases will be smoother.
